'Little old lady' robs bank

Police are hunting a crook who got clean away with more than

£10,000 after robbing a bank dressed as a little old lady. The ban-

dit shuffled into the bank in Hamburg, Germany, wearing a head-

scarf, thick glasses and a long coat before pulling a gun on cashiers.

More than 100 police officers took part in a chaotic city-wide search

for the cross-dressing blagger - and arrested five real-life old ladies

as suspects before letting them go. A police spokesman said: "A

cashier said they saw a smiling little old lady come up to the cash

desk, but then she suddenly whipped out a gun, roared in a deep

male voice to hand over the cash and then fled like as quickly as an

Olympic athlete."A lot of bank robbers just put a balaclava over their

heads to hide their face, but this particular disguise was very well

thought out and makes catching them especially hard."

Smuggler hid birds in pants

Customs officers in Los Angeles have arrested an alleged smug-

gler - with 14 Asian songbirds hooked to his socks/PA Sony

Dong was arrested after a 15-hour flight to Los Angeles from

Vietnam, reports the Daily Mirror. Police officers had "found bird

feathers and droppings on his socks, as well as tail feathers vis-

ible under his trousers", according to the Department of

Justice.The birds included three red-whiskered bul-buls - listed

as harmful under US law - four magpie robins and six shama

thrushes.Customs began a probe before Christmas after finding

a trunk full of songbirds allegedly abandoned by 46-year-old

Dong at the airport. After his arrest, Dong told investigators he

bought the colourful birds to resell at up to £200 a time. They

are now in quarantine. His alleged accomplice Duc Le was later

arrested and found to have 51 Asian songbirds in his apartment.

Le, 34 and Dong, who have been charged with illegally import-

ing wildlife, face several years in jail if convicted.

Prince pops in to say sorry for

Queen's card

A 109-year-old woman who complained she kept getting the same

birthday card from the Queen had a personal response - from Prince

William. Catherine Masters suggested the Queen get a new dress

after receiving five cards with pictures of her wearing the same yel-

low dress. But the great-grandmother was amazed when the sec-

ond in line to the throne breezed in to see her at the Grange Care

Centre in Stanford in the Vale, Oxfordshire. During the surprise visit,

Prince William apologised and promised that his grandmother

would wear a different outfit for the next card. "I told him I would

like the Queen to have a new dress," she said. "I think either a blue

or white one would be nice." Mrs Masters and the casually-dressed

young royal shared tea and scones during his 40-minute visit. She

said: "You should have seen the smile on my face when the hand-

some young prince walked in. He asked me why I was still so fit and

I put it down to a daily tipple of gin until I was 80. "We talked about

lots of things. He told me he liked making shepherd's pie and said

he used a masher to mash the potatoes, but I told him he was doing

it wrong - he should use a fork to fluff the potatoes." Mrs Masters

wrote to the Queen about her dress earlier this year. Buckingham

Palace replied saying the Queen changed the picture every five

years and would be changing it this year. The care home also wrote

separately to the Palace after learning one of Mrs Masters' ambi-

tions was to meet the Prince. She has been invited to a garden party

at Buckingham Palace on 7 July.

HOLY INDIAN MAN

NEEDS ELECTRICITY

A holy man in northern India says he has to touch live electricity

wires every day for a 'kick'. Sadhu Mangal Das alias 'Current

Baba', touches a naked wire at least three times every day to

become 'intoxicated'.It's reported he brushed against a live wire

sometime ago and found the sensation to be so good he can no

longer do without his daily dose. The man from Bahorisar in Uttar

Pradesh said he tried the electricity wires because drugs failed

to excite him, says The Hindustan Times. The 54-year-old also

tried getting bitten by snakes and scorpions. He also tried drink-

ing potions made from poisonous

seeds.Dr

Amit Chaturvedi of

the Lalitpur Civil Hospital said: "The human body can absorb

currents up to 12 volts. In this case however, repeated exposure

to electricity seems to have built up his body's tolerance levels

to as much as 16 volts."
