SHARP WORDS CUT

LIKE A SWORD

I was involved in an experience some six or seven years ago. It has

bothered me a lot ever since. I’m writing this so if you ever find your-

self in a similar situation you may be able to do more good. I had a

welding shop just off US1. I’d often work odd hours of the day and

night. Sometimes a couple of times a day I would see a big, as in

strong, fit black man jogging past my

shop.We

would wave and he’d

be gone. I started working out in a gym and there was one familiar

face, it was the jogger. We became friends. I don’t want to use his

name, we’ll call him James. He lived near my shop and invited me

to his house. I never did make it over, what with the kids, a wife and

work each day just flew by. After some time, I no longer saw James

at the gym or jogging. One day I had just drivenWest over the cause-

way. There was my friend walking East on the side of the road. I

waved and was past him, when I realized how sad he looked. I went

all the way to the light and turned around going back across the

causeway. I then turned around again and once more crossed the

causeway Westbound. Finally pulling along side of my friend, who

was still walking on the grass Eastward. He got in my truck and I

again did the loop and headed back Eastbound across the cause-

way. I took him to a friend of his on beachside, where he had been

going. I left him there. When we were driving, I asked James what

was wrong? He had been working at a Marina when I had last seen

him at the gym. He really liked his job. Things were fairly good. He

told me, he was at work and some woman on a boat, started yelling

real rude, stupid things at him. It’s been such a long time now, I can’t

remember exactly what she said to him. I do remember James say-

ing he took as much as he could stand before he said something

back. The woman was offended and went to James’ boss who fired

him. Losing the job absolutely crushed my friend. As time passed

he got so depressed that the night before I saw him, he had smoked

some crack. A life he had thought he had left far behind. He was

absolutely at his wits end over having had a relapse. He was that

down and still when we arrived were he was going, I said something

stupid; I can’t remember now, something like, Don’t worry James.

Just don’t smoke anymore and it will be like you never went back to

it. With that I let him out and said good-bye. I saw my friend one

more time. I was working on a building site near the Airport. He was

hired on by some company there as a day laborer. I remember see-

ing him and saying hi. A few day later someone told me; You know

James, the guy on the building site, he jumped off a water tower.

Two things struck me out of all this sorrow. First, how one person’s

meanness can have such devastating effects on another person’s

life. Sometimes a person’s harsh words really do cut like a sword.

Second; If you know someone that you think needs help, take the

time to help that person. I could see in James’ face, he needed help.

To this day, I’m not sure what I should have done but I know, I

shouldn’t have just said it will be OK and dropped him off.
